Photo of the Day

As my final post before my California road trip I think it fitting to highlight the work of Lee Friedlander, whose show ‘America by Car’ is at the Whitney Museum in New York until November 28th. The lure of the open road and our attachment to our cars and the sense of freedom they provide has been well documented,  in many different mediums. Friedlander uses photography to record roadside America, traveling through much of the US by rental car taking anything but a classical landscape photograph. The car itself, it’s windows and doors, the juxtapositions created by rearview mirrors, is an important element. These frames are deliberate and purposeful, highlighting an estrangement and isolation from the landscape within these metal boxes, as at the same time the car is the literal vehicle  for discovering that landscape to begin with.
