Movie Night: August DWR Berkeley Studio Event

My favorite Thrusday night activity returns. Design Within Reach in Berkeley is hosting another movie night, bringing back Helvetica director Gary Hustwit’s newest documentary ‘Objectified’.

About the film:

Objectified is a feature-length documentary about our complex relationship with manufactured objects and, by extension, the people who design them. It’s a look at the creativity at work behind everything from toothbrushes to tech gadgets. It’s about the designers who re-examine, re-evaluate and re-invent our manufactured environment on a daily basis. It’s about personal expression, identity, consumerism, and sustainability.

As the dirctor says “The term objectified has two meanings. One is ‘to be treated with the status of a mere object.’ But the other is ‘something abstract expressed in a concrete form,’ as in the way a sculpture objectifies an artist’s thoughts. It’s the act of transforming creative thought into a tangible object, which is what designers in this film do every day. But maybe there’s a third meaning to this title, regarding the ways these objects are affecting us and our environment. Have we all become objectified?”

The screening is free, the snacks are free, and for the length of the movie you can pretend that the Eames lounger you’re relaxing in is yours.
