The Small Stakes

I first came across Jason Munn’s work in the Curiosity Shoppe, across the street from my old San Francisco Mission apartment. His designs were appealingly simple, humorous, and very well executed. Munn, a local Oakland artist with work that is part of the permanent collection at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, started The Small Stakes in 2003, and has created some of the freshest band and concert posters in decades. His pieces are so graphically charming that your enjoyment of the band featured is secondary, if important at all; they stand on their own. I then came across his work again last fall at a DWR event and had to restrain myself from purchasing a print – I just couldn’t decide which one to get. Luckily now I don’t have to. Munn has released a book, ‘The Small Stakes: Music Posters’ with over 150 posters for $25.00. It is available from most major bookstores but if you purchase it directly from Munn your book will be signed. For a limited time all orders will also include a 6×9 letterpress print. Munn also has a new design in honor of National Bike Month this May that has both kittens and bicycles, so very OE. If, however,  you can’t commit to a single poster, the book lets you have all of them in your home and would make a lovely addition to any coffee table or nightstand.
